Zelda was my hiking partner. We hiked the #8334 and #8336 trails, bordering Light Hill Road. She was responsible for steep or windy trails and when to press on to another vista. She knew when to put down the pencil and trace and just take a hike. Zelda would pause to take in the view; understanding the raw beauty in everything that surrounds us- from the scrub oak to the sage brush and pinon pine. Connecting with nature is critical to understanding where we are in designing and building. Only when we connect with nature, does the built environment respect the place and the surroundings.
Zelda's brother is circa 10 months. He is irascible, irreverent and yet playful. Like Zelda, Sisu- Finnish for perseverance- can throw down the drafting supplies and play flaneur for hours. He is a wanderer and imbues many of Zelda's finest qualities.
